Improved workholding for high and narrow workpieces

High and narrow workpieces often require different workholding approaches than standard machining setups. Limited support area, reduced rigidity, and restricted machining access can make clamping more challenging, especially when higher cutting parameters or multi-side machining operations are involved.

The OK-VISE Multi-Rail system provides modular solutions for both applications. Raised clamping modules improve support and accessibility for taller workpieces, while compact rail-based configurations enable stable and repeatable clamping for narrow components.

Raised clamp module D-series

OK-VISE’s concept for clamping high workpieces in the Multi-Rail system is based on the use of raised clamp modules:

The module raises the clamping surface and grips the workpiece at a height of 29.4 mm, providing better support for taller components and improving setup rigidity.

The raised Clamp Module can be used:

  • Or by clamping the workpiece against another raised Clamp Module, as shown in the example setup

This approach also enables multiple workpieces to be clamped within the same setup. In comparison, using a raised stop module configuration is typically better suited for clamping a single workpiece at a time.

Two surface versions are available:

  • Smooth version → when marking of the workpiece surface should be minimized and lower friction is acceptable
  • Serrated version → when maximum clamping grip is required

When using serrated contact surfaces, it is important to apply sufficient clamping force so that the serration partially penetrates the workpiece surface. This allows the full benefit of the increased friction and holding force to be achieved.

RMRC-29

The RMRC-29 clamp module riser enables simultaneous clamping of multiple workpieces by allowing a single clamp module to securely hold two workpieces at the same time. In addition, it improves space utilization on the rail, making it possible to maximize the number of parts in a setup.

For applications where workpieces can be loaded in pairs, the RMRC-29 is the perfect solution for achieving greater output from the same setup while maintaining a compact and flexible workholding arrangement.

Clamping narrow workpieces with Multi-Rail

Narrow workpieces can create accessibility challenges in Multi-Rail setups. In the standard Multi-Rail configuration, the most common stop module width is 44 mm, while standard Clamp Modules have a width of 29.6 mm (41 mm including the spring assembly).

For very narrow components, this can limit machining access when the goal is to machine not only the top surface, but also the sides of the workpiece within the same setup.

To improve accessibility for narrow parts, the Multi-Rail system can be configured using:

Narrow workpiece fixture 2.Narrow workpiece fixture.

These modules reduce the amount of fixture material around the workpiece and improve access for side machining operations while maintaining stable clamping and repeatable positioning.

Typical benefits include:

  • Improved access for side machining
  • Smaller fixture footprint around the workpiece

The modular structure also enables multiple workpieces to be clamped within the same setup when required.

Ready-made Multi-Rail sets

OK-VISE has introduced ready-made Multi-Rail sets to simplify the implementation of modular workholding solutions.

Dedicated product pages are now available for Multi-Rail RL, RM, and RH series. Each set includes:

  • Dimension drawings
  • 3D models
  • Clear size-based configurations

The sets provide a straightforward starting point for modular fixture construction.

At the same time, it is important to understand that the Multi-Rail system has been developed as a fully modular workholding platform. The setup can always be modified according to the machining task and workpiece requirements.
